The Future of the Times

Posted by Simon Lameth on September 23, 2006

Well, With Luke Birdbrain leaving and the in-world edition dissapearing, I’ve taken some time to think and plan the future of the Second Life Times, this is what I got:

-Sell the Times.
or…
-Make it better.

It was a hard decision. I really thought about selling it, but decided not to. So, We’re making it better, and this is how we are going to do that:

-PHOTOS!
Although I usually don’t post them, I do take pictures sometimes for stories. We’re going to be installing a gallery soon so you can see the ones that do not (or never did) get into the blog.

-MORE VISITOR INTERACTION!
I plan on having the Times be somewhat interactive, Probally a shoutbox or more encouragement to participate in the MetaForums will be incorporated.

-OTHER STUFF!
We are beginning to plan the Newsmakers 2006 awards for this year, and I think it will be greatly improved over last years. Last years was so small, I can name all 5 people who came, Hinoserm Rebus, Leif Ming, Tren Neva, Casey Benton, and Urienzus Sklar.
The 1st birthday is also approaching, more details on both of these events will be released ASAP!

If you have anything you would like to see the Times do, Email me at metaversemedia@gmail.com .

The Day The Lindens Spoke

Posted by Simon Lameth on September 13, 2006

At this moment, the grid is accessable to Lindens only, following a day where, as usual on a wednesday update, everything goes horribilly wrong.

One single blog post has 16 updates to it, plus the base post and 3 additional posts, that totals 19 points of Linden-to-user contact!

Here’s a sample:

[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 1:33 PM PDT/SLT] We’re aware logins are failing :*(, I managed to login after numerous tries. We’ll keep you posted, keep watching this space. -Torley Linden

[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 1:26 PM PDT/SLT] I’ve gotten an “Unable to connect to Second Life error” several times, I’ve let my fellow Lindens know. More to come… -Torley Linden

“[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 1:20 PM PDT/SLT] Logins definitely slow right now—I’m trying to get in and it’s freezing during the login sequence for me. So it’s not just you! Don’t try to relog, just stay in the queue. I’ll update with further progress when I can finally get in. -Torley Linden

[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 1:14 PM PDT/SLT] WE’RE OPEN NOW! Initial logins will be slow during the rush… we’ll be monitoring the situation. -Torley Linden

[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 12:41 PM PDT/SLT] I’m getting a lot of questions about the ETA of the grid opening—apologies, it’s still undetermined. We’ve got a problem on the login server we’re working on resolving. I will post AS SOON as we have an updated time. Promise. Seriously. -Torley Linden

[UPDATE - Sep. 13 @ 12:32 PM PDT/SLT] Sorry, Second Life isn’t open yet. We’re still doing testing! I’m actively watching the blog and will post new updates as they come. -Torley Linden”

I was just able to download the Second Life client, but an hour and a half ago the wait time was 1:23:00. One Hour Twenty Three minutes.

Stay tuned here and at the Linden Blog for more.

The Latest: LL Computers Compromised

Posted by Simon Lameth on September 12, 2006

The media is swarming on Second Life this week, but not in a good way.

Residents report seeing stories on MSNBC, FOX News and CNN the past few days, and we all know it’s a matter of time untill The Daily Show or Stephen Colbert picks up on the story.

So far, all communication from Linden Labs has not mentioned the possibilltiy that chat logs were included in the attack. However, blog posts show that “Linden Lab CEO Philip Linden personally handled more than 50 calls on Monday”, and Pathfinder and Ryan Linden won the award for “Most Phone Calls Awnsered”.

Today, Linden announced that the Friends Online page has been disabled for a number of reasons (none of which make any since together: “That adds up to a lot of web traffic. One reason why it’s disabled is to ensure smoother service in recent days during our security situation—resetting passwords”, What?!?! It was screwed before the security situation!)
The Times will continuing watching and posting on these developments.

BREAKING NEWS: LL Computers Compromised!

Posted by Simon Lameth on September 8, 2006

URGENT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

POSTED BY JESKA LINDEN:

On September 6 we discovered evidence that an intruder was able to access the Second Life database through the web servers. The exploit was shut down on the afternoon of September 6 when we discovered it.

Detailed investigation over the last two days confirmed that some of the unencrypted customer information stored in the database was compromised, potentially including Second Life account names, real life names and contact information, along with encrypted account passwords.

No credit card information is stored on the database in question, and that information has not been compromised.

As a precaution we have invalidated all Second Life account passwords. In order to log-in to Second Life you will have to create a new password. Please access the log-in page at https://secondlife.com/password, and click on the “Forgot Password” link. An email will be sent to the email address you have registered with us. (Don’t forget to check your spam filter!) Please click through the link in that email, answer the security question, and create a new password.

Massive Illegial Prims On SL Exchange

Posted by Simon Lameth on September 3, 2006

According to Gene Replacement, a set of prims that, with 1 prim, cover an entire sim. Like the ones covering the sim Satyr and surrounding.
According to Gene Replacement, Linden Labs has asked these prims not be used, because someone placing them in the middle of a sim would make the sim unusable.

They are being sold for L$500 Here on SL Exchange.
